Artist Statement
This series of photographs was taken while traveling in San Francisco, capturing the city from a traveler’s perspective. Toward the end of the trip, I also focused on finding similarities between San Francisco and my hometown.
I chose San Francisco because I come from Busan, a coastal city, and I expected to feel a sense of familiarity in another port city.
Most of my photographs focus on the architecture of the city. At the beginning of my trip, I photographed landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of Fine Arts, capturing their strong colors and unique atmosphere. I also included wide landscape shots to show the overall view of the city.
On the last day, I did things I usually do in my hometown and photographed what I saw. I visited a small bookstore instead of a tourist spot and took photos while walking and waiting at a crosswalk. Busan is known for its hills, where you can see houses close together with the ocean in the background. From Lombard Street, I saw a similar view of pastel-colored buildings and the sea.
I captured this scene while thinking about my hometown. Through these images, I hope viewers can see how the city’s architecture blends with nature and feel the joy of discovering everyday spaces.
